ACTION 4. Disclosing results and transference of knowledge between the scientific community, fishermen and the public.
Knowledge sharing between scientists and fishermen is crucial to achieve resource sustainability goals. This project and its tools promote share and interchange of knowledge between all parties. Therefore, promotion is essential to achieve the intended goals.
The main goal for this action is to advertise anadromous fish problems to the fishing community and the general public, by raising awareness, and changing consciences and receptivity to this kind of initiatives. Planned dissemination actions are intended to address:
- The importance of anadromous fish in ecological, conservationist and socioeconomic terms;
- Fishing activity and communities from river basins and nearby coastal areas where these species are targeted by fisheries.
- Research and management to achieve sustainable exploitation of resources.
It’s also intended to raise awareness to the fact that direct or indirect potential short-time investments and sacrifices induced by sustainable exploitation of the resources will be translated socioeconomically for all parties making use of the resources in any cases.
In order to fulfil promoting and communication goals, Action 4 consists of 5 tasks: T4.1. Creating and promoting a social media account; T4.2. Conceiving and designing a website; T4.3. Graphic design and production of triptych brochure and book of good practices; T4.4. Conceiving and execution of exhibition contents; T4.5. Conceiving, executing and disclosing a promotional video; T4.6. Conducting seminars for the fishing community.
FRAMEWORK FOR THE OPERATIONAL PROGRAM MAR2020
Proposed actions fall into “Innovation and transference of knowledge between scientists and fishermen” domain and for this purpose, a partnership network in which scientific organisms, fishermen associations and administration are represented is being settled.
Thus, this project promotes sustainability purposes at the three main levels: Economic, Social and Environmental, fulfilling Operational Program Mar2020’s global goal: “Promoting competitiveness based on knowledge and innovation, ensuring sustainable exploitation of living biological resources, contributing to a good environmental status of marine waters as well as contributing to coastal area development, increasing jobs, and promoting integrated maritime policy.”
EUROPEAN POLICY
In order to promote integrated management and sustainable fishing, developed work and associated tasks are in line with the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) which states that: “between 2015 and 2020, catch limits should be set that are sustainable and maintain fish stocks in the long term.”, allowing member states to manage their fisheries at Maximum Sustainable Yield level.
Thus, this project also responds to what is promoted through Framework Directive Marine Strategy (FDMS) developing strategies that contribute to good environmental status ensuring sustainable use of marine goods and services, safeguarding their utility potential to current and future generations.
